How to make your Mac desktop aesthetic.

An aesthetic Mac desktop comes down to six free macOS settings: one calm wallpaper, hidden or stacked desktop icons, a smaller Dock that hides itself, Dark Mode with a matching accent color, a trimmed menu bar, and very few widgets.
Every label below is quoted from Apple’s macOS Tahoe 26 User Guide, with the macOS Sequoia 15 name where it differs. Only the last section involves an app.
The short version
- Clutter, not the wallpaper, makes most desktops look bad. Hide the icons or turn on Stacks first.
- macOS shows one still image; composing many that keep changing is the one step that needs an app.
The whole setup, in six steps
About 15 minutes, in this order. Each step has its own section below.
- 1Pick one wallpaper with one mood. System Settings › Wallpaper: a Colors swatch, a Pictures image, or Add Photo for your own. Keep contrast low where the icons sit.
- 2Clear the desktop. System Settings › Desktop & Dock › Show Items: turn off On Desktop. Or click the desktop and choose View › Use Stacks.
- 3Shrink the Dock and let it hide. Desktop & Dock: drag Size down, turn on Automatically hide and show the Dock, turn off Show suggested and recent apps in Dock.
- 4Match the chrome to the wallpaper. System Settings › Appearance: Dark or Auto, a Color (Accent color on Sequoia) from the wallpaper, and Tint window background with wallpaper style on.
- 5Trim the menu bar. System Settings › Menu Bar (Control Center on Sequoia and earlier): Show When Active for every control you do not read daily.
- 6Add one or two widgets, or none. Control-click the wallpaper › Edit Widgets, click a widget, click Done. Set Dim widgets on desktop to Always for monochrome.

Which wallpaper makes a Mac desktop look aesthetic?
One mood, held consistently, beats a beautiful image that fights the screen. Empty space where the icons sit reads as calm; detail under detail reads as noise.
- 1Open System Settings and click Wallpaper. Colors applies a solid-color background, the simplest base if the icons will be hidden anyway.
- 2For your own image, scroll to Your Photos, click Add Photo, then Choose File for one image or Choose Folder for a folder macOS can rotate through.
- 3Options appear next to the wallpaper name at the top of the pane. Check the fit before closing.

How do you hide or organize the icons on a Mac desktop?
Hide everything, or let Stacks group it.
- 1Hide: System Settings › Desktop & Dock › Show Items, turn off On Desktop. Items stay hidden until you click the desktop; the files stay where they were.
- 2Stack: click the desktop and choose View › Use Stacks (Control-Command-0). Group Stacks By sorts by kind, date or tag; new files drop into the right stack.
- 3Control-click the desktop › Show View Options for icon size and grid spacing. Finder › Settings › General › Show these items on the desktop governs hard-disk icons.
- 4Stage Manager, in Desktop & Dock or from Control Center, is a third route. It changes how windows behave, so try it for a full day.
Hiding icons hides clutter; it does not remove it.
How should the Dock be set up for a clean Mac desktop?
The Dock is always on screen. Small and hidden is the aesthetic default; small and visible the practical one.
- 1Desktop & Dock: drag the Size slider down until icons are just readable.
- 2Turn on Automatically hide and show the Dock; the pointer at that edge brings it back.
- 3Turn off Show suggested and recent apps in Dock, and drag any app you never open out of the Dock until Remove is shown.
- 4On a wide display, Dock position on screen set to Left or Right frees the bottom edge.
Auto-hide costs a short pause each time you reach for the Dock.
Does Dark Mode make a Mac desktop more aesthetic?
It makes the desktop coherent: chrome that matches the wallpaper’s brightness, an accent from the same palette, toolbars tinted by the wallpaper.
- 1System Settings › Appearance › Appearance: Dark, or Auto, which follows your Night Shift schedule.
- 2Set Color (Accent color on Sequoia) to a color already in the wallpaper.
- 3Turn on Tint window background with wallpaper style (Allow wallpaper tinting in windows on Sequoia): wallpaper colors subtly tint toolbars and status bars.
- 4Tahoe only: Icon & widget style offers Default, Dark, Clear and Tinted; Folder color recolors every Finder folder at once.
Tinted recolors every app icon and is the easiest effect here to overdo.
How do you tidy the Mac menu bar?
A dozen status icons undo everything else. Aim for three or four.
- 1System Settings › Menu Bar. On Sequoia and earlier the same list is in System Settings › Control Center.
- 2Set each control to Show When Active; keep Always Show only for what you read daily, such as Battery.
- 3Automatically hide and show the menu bar: Always, On Desktop Only, In Full Screen Only or Never.
- 4Show menu bar background: off shows the wallpaper behind the bar; on gives it a solid background.
Third-party menu-bar apps, VisionWall included, appear further down the same pane.
Can you change folder icons to match the wallpaper?
Yes; colors age better than pictures.
- 1Tahoe: select a folder, click the Action button, choose Customize Folder, then pick a color, a symbol or an emoji. Applications, Library, System and Users cannot be customized.
- 2Any macOS: copy an image, select the folder, choose File › Get Info, click the small icon at the top of the Info window, then Edit › Paste. Edit › Cut there restores the original.
- 3To recolor every folder at once on Tahoe, use Folder color in System Settings › Appearance.
Can the wallpaper itself be a living mood board?
Not with macOS alone, and this is the only section that involves an app
The Wallpaper pane sets one still image, and Shuffle rotates a folder you filled yourself. Neither composes several images into one wallpaper or follows a source that keeps producing.

How do I hide all the icons on my Mac desktop without deleting anything?
System Settings › Desktop & Dock › Show Items: turn off On Desktop. The files stay in your Desktop folder and in the Finder; only the desktop stops drawing them. Turn On Desktop back on to undo.
Is Stage Manager worth turning on for an aesthetic Mac desktop?
Try it for a day, not a minute. Stage Manager keeps one app centered and parks the others on the left; the Show Items › In Stage Manager checkbox decides whether desktop files stay visible meanwhile. Tidy at once; whether it suits how you work takes longer to know.
Do I need a third-party app to make my Mac desktop aesthetic?

How do I keep desktop icons readable over a detailed wallpaper?
Either take the icons off the wallpaper (Show Items › On Desktop off, or Stacks) or take the detail out from under them: a Colors swatch, a photo with empty space at the edge, or in VisionWall fewer columns, wider margins and a darker background color.
