VisionWall vs the built-in macOS wallpaper rotation.

If you have a folder of images you like and want a different one on the desktop every hour, you do not need an app. Open System Settings, click Wallpaper, add the folder, set Shuffle to Every Hour, and you are done. It is free, already installed, and this page will not talk you out of it.
You need something else in three cases: the pictures should keep coming, you want a wall of many images rather than one, or the source is a Pinterest board rather than a folder. That is VisionWall’s job, for $11.99 once, on macOS 13.3 or later. Built-in macOS rotation
A pool of files you maintain, shown one at a time.
macOS rotates through images already on your Mac: a folder you add with Choose Folder…, a Photos album or Photo Set, or Apple’s own Aerials and Dynamic Wallpapers. Each change puts one image on the desktop, full screen, in file order or randomly. When the pool goes stale, you refill it.
VisionWall
A board that keeps growing, composed as one wall.
VisionWall takes one public Pinterest board URL, composes many pins into a masonry wallpaper, and recomposes it on a timer: every 30 minutes by default, 2 minutes to 2 hours, reshuffled every time. Pins you save tomorrow are on the desktop tomorrow, with nothing to download.
So the question is not free against $11.99. It is whether your wallpaper is a finished set or a feed. A set belongs in a folder; a feed needs something that reads the feed.

Choose the built-in rotation if
You already own the images
A folder of photos you like is exactly what the feature was built for. Point Shuffle at it and buy nothing.
One full-screen picture is the look
macOS shows one image at a time, edge to edge. If that is what you want, a composition of many pins is noise, not an upgrade.
You want day-and-night or aerial wallpapers
Dynamic Wallpapers follow the time of day and Aerials animate as you lock or unlock your Mac. VisionWall has neither, and does not pretend to.

You want a wall, not a slide

Can macOS change the wallpaper every hour by itself?
Yes. In System Settings, click Wallpaper, add a folder with Choose Folder… or pick a Photo Set, select it, then set Shuffle to Every Hour. On macOS 26.5.2 the Shuffle list for a folder or Photo Set is Every 5 Seconds, Every Minute, Every 5 Minutes, Every 15 Minutes, Every 30 Minutes, Every Hour, Every Day, On Login and On Wakeup, with nothing between Every Hour and Every Day. VisionWall’s timer runs anywhere from 2 minutes to 2 hours.
Is the built-in macOS wallpaper shuffle free?

What are the limitations of the macOS wallpaper shuffle?
It shows one image at a time from images already on your Mac. It cannot follow a website or a Pinterest board, cannot compose several images into one wallpaper, and its Shuffle intervals are a fixed list. In return it has strengths VisionWall lacks: Dynamic Wallpapers that follow the time of day and Aerials that animate, at no cost.
Can the built-in rotation use a Pinterest board?
Not directly. macOS reads a folder on your disk or your Photos library. You can save pins by hand into a folder and rotate that, which costs nothing, but new pins will not arrive on their own. VisionWall reads the public board itself and picks up new pins at the next refresh. Private and secret boards cannot be read.
Is a paid app worth it over the free dynamic wallpaper on a Mac?
Only if you need what the free one cannot do. Apple’s Dynamic Wallpapers and Aerials are things VisionWall does not offer. Pay for VisionWall when the source is a public Pinterest board that keeps growing and you want many pins composed into one wall, per display. Otherwise keep the money.
