Use a Photos album as your Mac wallpaper (and where it falls short)
Updated · Lucas Viegas · 6 min read
Yes, and it is built in. Open System Settings → Wallpaper, select the album under Photo Sets, then set Shuffle to an interval. macOS shows one photo from the album at a time, full screen, and swaps it on that schedule, for free.
Below: which Photos sources the pane actually offers (albums yes, Memories no), what Shuffle does to an album, the fastest way to build one, what iCloud Photos changes, and the honest limits. Control names are quoted as they appear on macOS 26.5.2 (Tahoe), checked against Apple’s support pages and against our guide to automatic wallpaper rotation.
The short version
- An album is a Photo Set. Apple’s instruction is to select an album or folder under Photo Sets; on macOS 26.5.2 (Tahoe) that group also holds Favorites and people-based sets.
- Selecting the album starts no rotation. Shuffle is a separate control with nine fixed intervals, and Randomly mixes the order.
- It is always one photo, full screen, from your own library. No grid, no web source, no Pinterest.
How do you set a Photos album as your Mac wallpaper?
Two apps, six steps. The only trap is step four: an album that is selected but never given an interval shows one photo forever.
- 1Build the album in Photos. Open Photos, select the pictures you want on the desktop, then choose File → New Album with Selection and type a name. Add more later by dragging photos onto the album in the sidebar, or Control-click a photo and choose Add To. Landscape pictures suit a screen; portrait ones get cropped or letterboxed.
- 2Open the Wallpaper pane. Choose Apple menu → System Settings and click Wallpaper in the sidebar. Rotation lives here, not in Screen Saver.
- 3Select the album under Photo Sets. Scroll to the bottom of the pane. Apple’s instruction is to select an album or folder under Photo Sets; the album becomes the active wallpaper and macOS shows one photo from it straight away. Choose from Photos… is the single-picture route, not this one.
- 4Set Shuffle to an interval. Set the Shuffle control to Every 5 Seconds, Every Minute, Every 5 Minutes, Every 15 Minutes, Every 30 Minutes, Every Hour, Every Day, On Login or On Wakeup. An album on its own starts no rotation. Turn on Randomly to mix the order instead of showing the album in sequence.
- 5Choose how the photos fill the screen. Use the pop-up menu next to the wallpaper thumbnail. Apple’s Ventura edition names the choices: Fill Screen, Fit to Screen, Stretch to Fill Screen, Center and Tile. Fill Screen crops a portrait phone photo; Fit to Screen keeps it whole with bars at the sides.
- 6Repeat on the other display, or share it. Each display keeps its own wallpaper and its own Shuffle setting, so open the pane with the other display active and choose the album again. Or turn on Show on all Spaces to use the same wallpaper on every desktop space and display.
Which Photos sources does the Wallpaper pane offer?
Choose from Photos…
One picture from the library, picked in a browser. Apple’s page calls this adding a photo from your Photos library, and the shortcut is the Share button in Photos itself, then Set Wallpaper. Pictures added this way collect under Your Photos, and Apple’s Sequoia page says that group can shuffle too.
Photo Sets
Albums and folders from the Photos app, in Apple’s words. On macOS 26.5.2 the group also holds Favorites and people-based sets, so favoriting is the quickest album of all: click the Favorite button on a photo, and Favorites in the sidebar collects them.
Memories are not on the list. Neither current Apple wallpaper page names them, and the Photos User Guide describes a memory as photos and videos set to music that you watch like a movie, under Collections → Memories. The photos inside one are ordinary library photos: add them to an album and use the album. Older labels, same feature: Apple’s Sequoia page calls the control the Add Folder or Album button, and on Ventura it was Add Photo Album, with Auto-Rotate where Shuffle is now.
How does Shuffle apply to an album?
Apple’s Sequoia edition of the Wallpaper settings page describes an album as “a collection of images to choose as your wallpaper”, with the images from the chosen folder or album shown at the bottom of the window. Then: choose how long to show each image from the pop-up menu next to the current wallpaper thumbnail, and select Randomly to mix the order. That pop-up is Shuffle, and its intervals are fixed: Every 5 Seconds, Every Minute, Every 5 Minutes, Every 15 Minutes, Every 30 Minutes, Every Hour, Every Day, plus On Login and On Wakeup. Nothing sits between Every Hour and Every Day.
Two things Apple does not say
A Photo Set reads your library rather than a copied folder, so a photo added to the album belongs to the same set. Whether a rotation already running picks it up before its next pass was not measured, so no figure is claimed here.
And rotations driven by a Photos album are where most reports of a wallpaper that quietly stops advancing come from. The fixes are collected in our troubleshooting guide.
What does iCloud Photos change?
The album follows you
With iCloud Photos on, Apple says your photos and albums are organized the same way on every device, and edits or removals appear everywhere. So build the album on the iPhone, where the photos are, and it turns up under Photo Sets on the Mac; a photo removed from the album on the phone leaves the album on the Mac as well.
Storage is the catch
Optimize Mac Storage keeps smaller versions on the Mac when space is limited and the originals in iCloud. Apple’s wallpaper pages do not say which version the desktop uses, and it was not measured here, so if crispness on a large display matters, choose Download Originals to this Mac in Photos → Settings, under iCloud.
Where does a Photos album fall short?
- One photo at a time. The pane has no concept of arranging several pictures into one wallpaper, so a mood board or a grid is not something it can produce.
- Your library only. Nothing follows a website, a feed or a Pinterest board. Pins would be downloaded and imported one by one, and you are the feed.
- Nine intervals and a habit of stalling. No change every two hours, and the known failure above.
If the pictures you want on the desktop live on Pinterest rather than in Photos, the built-in route is the wrong shape. VisionWall is a macOS menu-bar app that turns any public Pinterest board into a live, rotating desktop wallpaper: many pins composed into a masonry grid, reshuffled on every refresh, every 30 minutes by default and anywhere from 2 minutes to 2 hours, with new pins appearing automatically and one composition per display. It costs $9.99 once, needs macOS 13.3 Ventura or later, and reads public boards only. The comparison page sets it against the built-in rotation, feature by feature.
| Photos album | Folder on disk | VisionWall | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What rotates | One photo at a time, full screen | One file at a time, full screen | A masonry composition of many pins, reshuffled on every refresh |
| Source | An album in your Photos library | Image files on disk | A public Pinterest board URL |
| How it changes | Shuffle: nine fixed intervals, Every 5 Seconds to Every Day, plus On Login and On Wakeup | The same Shuffle control | Every 30 minutes by default, 2 minutes to 2 hours |
| New images | Add them to the album; the set reads the library | Drop files into the folder yourself | Pins saved to the board appear automatically |
| Displays | Set per display | Set per display | One composition per display |
| Limits | Your library only; rotations known to stall | Static until you refill it | Public boards only; macOS 13.3 Ventura or later |
| Price | Free | Free | $9.99 once, no subscription, no account |

FAQ
Can I use a Photos album as my Mac wallpaper?
Yes. Apple’s Mac User Guide says to select an album or folder under Photo Sets in System Settings → Wallpaper, and its Sequoia edition describes an album as a collection of images to choose as your wallpaper. Select the album, then set Shuffle to an interval; without one the album sits on a single photo.
Can I use Memories as my Mac wallpaper?
Not as a source. Apple’s current wallpaper pages list a single photo, an image file, a folder, and an album or folder under Photo Sets. Memories appear only in the Photos User Guide, as collections set to music that you watch like a movie. The photos inside a memory are ordinary library photos, so add them to an album and use that.
Do photos I add to the album later join the rotation?
A Photo Set reads your library rather than a copied folder, so a photo added to the album belongs to the same set. Whether a rotation that is already running picks it up before its next pass was not measured, so no figure is quoted here. If the rotation stops advancing altogether, that is a separate, known problem with its own fixes.
Why did my Photos album wallpaper stop changing?
Rotations driven by a Photos album have a habit of quietly freezing on one image, with no error and no warning. Check first that Shuffle still shows an interval on the display that stopped, since each display keeps its own setting; our troubleshooting guide collects the rest of the fixes.
Can I use a Pinterest board instead of a Photos album?
Not with the built-in feature. It reads image files on disk and your Photos library and has no way to follow a web source, so pins would have to be downloaded and imported one by one. Reading the board itself takes an app, which is the alternative covered above, and the comparison page sets the two side by side.
