How to change the wallpaper on a Mac, every way there is

Open System Settings, click Wallpaper in the sidebar, and click any thumbnail. For your own picture, click Add Photo, then Choose from Photos, Choose File or Choose Folder. Faster: Control-click a file in the Finder and choose Set Desktop Picture.
Those labels are the macOS Tahoe 26 ones, and Apple has renamed several since Ventura, so every control below was checked on 7 September 2026 against four editions of Apple’s Mac User Guide: Tahoe 26, Sequoia 15, Sonoma 14 and Ventura 13. Where an edition documents nothing, this page says nothing. All four are under Sources.
Where is the wallpaper setting on a Mac?
One place, and it has not moved in four releases: Apple menu → System Settings, then Wallpaper in the sidebar. If you are hunting for a pane called Desktop & Screen Saver, stop. That was System Preferences, and Apple’s Monterey 12 edition is the last that describes it. The version-by-version map is a post of its own.
How do you set your own photo as the wallpaper?
Five steps; the fourth catches people out.
- 1Open the Wallpaper pane. Choose Apple menu → System Settings, then click Wallpaper in the sidebar. Apple warns you may need to scroll down. Same address on every macOS from Ventura 13 to Tahoe 26.
- 2Pick a built-in wallpaper, or scroll past them. Tahoe 26 lists Dynamic Wallpapers, Your photos, the Landscape, Cityscape, Underwater and Earth aerials, Shuffle Aerials, Pictures and Colors. Clicking a thumbnail applies it at once.
- 3Add your own picture. Under Your Photos, click Add Photo, then Choose from Photos, Choose File or Choose Folder. Ventura 13 has no Add Photo button: it documents Add Folder and Add Photo Album.
- 4Click what you added. Adding a source does not apply it. Click the photo, folder or album so it becomes the active wallpaper.
- 5Set the options. Show on all Spaces puts one wallpaper on every space and display. On a folder or album, Shuffle rotates it; Ventura 13 calls that Auto-Rotate.
Step three matters most on VisionWall’s minimum system. Ventura 13 has no Add Photo button: Apple documents Add Folder and Add Photo Album as two separate controls.
Is there a faster way than opening System Settings?
Three, all documented by Apple.
From the Finder
Control-click the image file, then click Set Desktop Picture. No pane, no dialog, no confirmation.
From Safari
Control-click the image, then choose Use Image as Desktop Wallpaper. Ventura 13 and Sonoma 14 read Use Image as Desktop Picture instead.
From Photos
Open Photos, select the photo, click the Share button in the toolbar, then click Set Wallpaper.
A fourth is documented unevenly. Ventura 13 and Sonoma 14 describe dragging an image onto the thumbnail of the current picture inside the Wallpaper pane. Tahoe 26 does not mention it, so treat it as undocumented rather than removed.

How do you undo it, or take a picture back out?
Every route above replaces the picture and nothing else, so the undo is setting another one. Removing a source is a separate documented step: hold the mouse pointer over the photo, folder or album in the Wallpaper pane, then click the Remove button. The file stays where it was.
What if you do not want to choose at all?
Then set a pool instead of a picture. Add a folder or an album, click it so it becomes the active wallpaper, and set Shuffle to an interval. On macOS 26.5.2 (Tahoe) that list runs from Every 5 Seconds to Every Day, plus On Login and On Wakeup, with nothing between Every Hour and Every Day. Know two limits: a folder is a snapshot, nothing arrives on its own, and macOS shows one image at a time, never several composed together. The picture is also only one setting among several; the six-setting walkthrough covers the icons, the Dock and Appearance.

FAQ
Why is my picture missing from the Wallpaper pane?
Apple answers this only in the Ventura 13 edition: photos that are not shown might not be in the expected file format, and the list given is JPEG, PICT, TIFF, PNG or HEIC. Sonoma 14, Sequoia 15 and Tahoe 26 name no formats at all. Ventura’s fix is to open the file in Preview and save it in a supported format.
Can each display have a different wallpaper?
Yes, and the control is the one that stops it. Apple documents Show on all Spaces as using the same wallpaper on every desktop space and display, so leaving it off lets a second monitor keep its own. On macOS 26.5.2, each display stores its own configuration.
How do I remove a picture I added by mistake?
Apple’s Tahoe 26 steps: open System Settings, click Wallpaper in the sidebar, hold the mouse pointer over the photo, folder or album, then click the Remove button. The file itself stays where it is.
The Safari command on my Mac says Desktop Picture, not Desktop Wallpaper. Why?
Your macOS version. Sequoia 15 and Tahoe 26 both write Use Image as Desktop Wallpaper; Monterey 12, Ventura 13 and Sonoma 14 write Use Image as Desktop Picture. Same command, same result.
Can macOS change the wallpaper on its own, without an app?
Yes. Add a folder or album, click it so it is the active wallpaper, then set Shuffle to an interval. Adding the folder alone starts nothing, the step most people miss. What it cannot do is follow a live source: it reads local files and your Photos library, one image at a time.
